Can you ever imagine a life without having arms? Now take it a step further and remove legs from the picture as well. As excruciating as it may sound, Nick Vujicic was born limbless in 1982, Brisbane, Australia. Back then, doctors could not explain why this strange case had happened, but now we know that it’s a condition called phocamelia. A congenital disease, where babies are born with malformed limbs.
A child like this would be reduced to home schooling, a life full of depression and regret, a burden on the parents and the society; but Nick Vujicic overcame all these challenges, became a motivational speaker, got married and fathered a child of his own. How this man made it so far is not only inspiring but also pretty jaw dropping.
Nick had narrated in his talks that he tried to kill himself when he was 10, by throwing himself in a bathtub full of water. His attempt failed miserably and it led him to believe that God didn’t want him to die. God had bigger things planned. Here’s how this man is a symbol of hope to everyone out there:
He personifies gratefulness
“… for every disability you have, you are blessed with more than enough abilities to overcome your challenges.”
He may not have proper limbs but Nick has a buckled little foot he refers to as his chicken drumstick. With the help of that little buddy, he does his everyday chores, uses a laptop and has even learnt to drive which is super cool. According to him, if he consumed all his brainpower into comparing himself to others who had everything he never could, his brain would exhaust itself out and become useless. Instead, he makes use of all his cognitive abilities to cook up things his chicken drumstick can do and help him into newer ventures. He is grateful because being appreciative about whatever you have brings about vital physiological, mental as well as community compensations. Being thankful helps him to grow every day, and shy away from depression, insomnia and total lack of activity.
Having faith in God is vital
“…God’s love is so real that He created you to prove it.”
Nick may have been born in Australia and currently resides in the US, but he repeatedly says that he’s from heaven. It is his faith in Jesus that has brought him this far, and is continuing to take him ahead, jump over obstacles, tackle hindrances and be a role model to people around him. His mission is to be the best version of himself he can be, because that is what God demands from all his rightful servants and that is only what can truly transform the world into a better place. Nick teaches us that faith in God and what you believe in can actually work miracles for you.
It is all in your head only
“Have you ever felt trapped in circumstances, then discovered that the only trap was your own lack of vision, lack of courage, or failure to see that you had better options?”
Quite so often we permit our state of affairs to dictate our lives and our actions. Vujicic has mastered the art of being oblivious to conditions that bring you down and let nothing direct his life other than his own being. Imagine a little boy who has no limbs, being ridiculed and shunned down at every step in life. It would have been very easy to give up and retort to a life where begging on the streets was the only tactic of survival. But Nick knew that it was all a mind game and nothing else: Where would he end up if he didn’t have control over his own mind? Would he become a superstar if he let his physical conditions overwhelm his brain? Its hard to believe but presently, Nick can snorkel, he’s excellent at golf, he surfs the waves at sea, and he has travelled to nearly 50 countries with his message crystal clear: Do not let anything take over you!
Everything must be appreciated
“I never met a bitter person who was thankful. Or a thankful person who was bitter.”
Nick teaches us that nothing in life can be taken for granted. We might have everything today but being going to rags from riches is something we can see on television every single day. Thereby, it is pivotal that you appreciate what you have, instead of constantly whining over what you don’t. The positivity will allow you to be happier, and live a content life. The negativity on the other hand has no limit whatsoever and it will consume you till you’re unhappy every single second of your life. Nick had a great shot at being negative but he chose to be happy instead. He has an electric wheelchair which takes him wherever he wants; he has a happily married life; he has become an inspiration to people around him as well as those who follow him from all around the globe.
Everybody needs a friend
“If a man without arms and legs is dreaming big why can’t we, why can’t we all?”
Regardless of his own mental strength, Nick has taught us that you can’t do everything on your own. His own parents were a source of motivation and encouragement for him. Not only did they introduce him to the concept of hardships bestowed by God, but they also showed him heartening documentaries of people who had suffered a lot but were still going strong. Similarly, he had friends like Billy Graham who took it upon themselves to never let him be down, and always lift his spirits up. This means that it is very important to have a positive social circle around you, and to let go of people who pity you or constantly bring you down. And if you’re a privileged person, you need to look for people around you who need help and be there for them always!
