Bill Gates is a name known by all. But if you ask people who Bill Gates is and why he rose to fame, they will only know that he’s the richest man in the United States and that he has something to do with computers! In reality, there’s a lot more to this man than just Microsoft.
Gates was a straight A’s kid, whose family urged education as a basic life necessity. He got into Harvard when 17, yet to everyone’s surprise, dropped out in the second year. He always had a knack for computing, thus he opened a small company with his friend Allen and that’s where the journey starts. To be really honest, Gates had a mind that was quite above what general institutes were teaching at that time, and he utilized his energy into bringing Microsoft to the World. A creation that’ll be remembered for centuries to say the least.
However, what Mr. Gates has achieved outside the realm of Microsoft is what really puts him on the pedestal of inspiring men. He formed the Bill and Melinda Gates society for purely humanitarian purposed and has been successful in catering issues that haven’t been looked upon even by governmental institutes. Let’s have a look:
“Is the rich world aware of how four billion of the six billion live? If we were aware, we would want to help out, we’d want to get involved.”
Back in 2010, Bill Gates and his companion Warren Buffet initiated the ‘Giving Pledge’ campaign, which bolstered billionaires around the globe to donate half of their money to humanitarian causes in their death wish, or during the course of their life. It was a very simple concept that focused only on morality and ethics rather than legal papers of all sorts. A platform where bigshots could gather and decide what they could do for the underprivileged. Needless to say, within 60 days of the initiation, there were about 125 billion dollars from 40 people! As of 2018, the pledge has 184 guarantors from a good 22 countries. Each and every person is mentioned on the official website with a personal letter stating why they decided to be a part of this campaign. The likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and Michael Bloomberg are contributors. The best part is that it does not essentially command that the money will be consumed in any particular method or concerning any specific trust, and there is no compulsion to donate. Even then Bill Gates has managed to gain around 735 billion dollars’ worth of charity for those in need. If that’s not amazing, we don’t know what is!
Breakthrough Energy Coalition
“Almost every way we make electricity today, except for the emerging renewables and nuclear, puts out CO2. And so, what we’re going to have to do at a global scale, is create a new system. And so, we need energy miracles.”
It takes a man to look into matters that really concern us other than how many babies Kim Kardashian is planning on having. And one of these is global warming (not her kid’s name by the way!). In the 2015 climate change summit in Paris, Gates initiated his new project; the Breakthrough Energy Coalition. It basically amalgamates the money of private investors and the brilliant minds of energy firms to materialize their ideas for clean energy into reality. Bill Gates himself, plus 28 other contributors brought together seven billion dollars to give this initiative a boost. Richard Branson, Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Ma, Jeff Bezos are among those who stepped forth. To make available consistent and reasonably priced power that doesn’t bring harm to the climate, the organization is focusing on five key areas: electricity, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, and buildings.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
“This [philanthropy] work is even more fascinating. It requires us to think harder about how we build partnerships, who we get behind. And yet we get to see progress that in some ways is even more profound than the great advances that digital technology has provided.”
The man built the Bill and Melinda gates foundation back in 2000, with the heart of a pure philanthropist! His aim was to help the underprivileged through better healthcare facilities, by eliminating hunger and helping the poor live a decent life with donations, to improve the standard of education etc. And he has done just that!
- The organization is supporting the GAVI Alliance, an international public-private corporation of researchers, health specialists, government front-runners, companies, and humanitarian establishments and additional officialdoms in India, Nigeria, and Ethiopia to offer vaccines for poverty-stricken individuals, particularly youngsters. The contributions also dedicated above US$3 billion in HIV donations to administrations all over the globe and above US$1.6 billion to the Global Trust to Combat Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), Tuberculosis as well as Malaria.
- On the other end of the spectrum, The Bill and Melinda gates foundation has extended support plans into Sub Saharan Africa as well as South Asia, focusing on petite farming setups that’ll not only help the family at hand, but also enhance the agricultural output of the area. The platform assumes a wide-ranging methodology that cohorts with administrations, NGOs, and private companies to deliver the planters with better approach to first-class seeds, dependable marketplaces and data on fruitful farming methods and machineries, and promote agrarian dogmas that aid farmers in their exertions to survive.
- In 2000, the Gates Foundation contributed $210 million to aid brilliant graduate scholars from the United States of America as well as globally to commence their studies at the esteemed University of Cambridge. The Gates Cambridge Grant has every so often been equaled to the Rhodes scholarship thanks to its worldwide latitude and generous benefaction. The studentship rests enormously picky with merely 0.3% of candidates being chosen, so that the best of the best can go ahead. Yearly, roughly 100 fresh graduate scholars obtain capital to join Cambridge University.
At least now you can say that you know a lot more about the great man rather than just being rich!
